When Somogyi launched Ambulance he threatened the band would produce accident and insurgency, and coupled with Henderson, the sparky catalyst of many a world-class group from Herbie Hancock to the Mingus Band, he delivered in style.

Described as five of the UKs most exciting young jazz musicians, Arnie Somogyis exceptional new band Ambulance teams up once more with one of Americas jazz legends, New York trumpeter Eddie Henderson (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Art Blakey) for a unique nationwide tour. This tour is to promote Ambulance's debut CD, "Accident and Insurgency", on which Henderson plays, released by Linn Records shortly before the tour commences. Don't miss what should be an amazing gig in the intimate confines of Lighthouse's Studio. The band has been receiving rave reviews, and sold out BMJC when they played Centre Stage in May 2007. Let's hope they can repeat the fireworks in 2008!
Eddie Henderson is one of the worlds truly legendary jazz trumpeters. Born in New York City and the son of a Cotton Club dancer, Eddie grew up surrounded by some of the worlds greatest jazz musicians, including Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis. He began playing the trumpet at the age of 10 and studied music theory at the San Francisco Conservatory from the age of 14, before later completing a degree in medicine at Berkeley.
It was Miles Davis who convinced Eddie to become a professional jazz musician and after gigs with Miles and John Handy, Eddie joined the legendary Herbie Hancock Sextet (who also recorded as the Mwandishi Band) in 1968. This highly experimental and successful band delved deeply into fusion and free jazz for three years.
Eddie continued in the fusion style during the seventies, making albums for Capricorn and Blue Note and joining Art Blakey's band for a while. He jammed around the Bay Area with great musicians such as Joe Henderson and Pharoah Sanders.
In the early nineties he moved back to New York where his career took off again with a series of exceptional albums for Steeple Chase and Milestone, while also working as a psychiatrist. (So as well as a great musician, he is also a qualified doctor just what every Ambulance needs!)
Eddie is now a much sought after performer on the international jazz circuit and plays regularly with leading musicians and bands in the US, Europe and Asia. Most importantly, he has also played with Ambulance as a featured guest during the latest series of headline gigs at Ronnie Scotts in September 2006 a powerful combination that was received with considerable acclaim.
Self-styled specialists in musical accident and insurgency, Arnie Somogyis highly creative new band first caused a stir at its launch in November 2004 at Ronnie Scotts Club in Soho, later returning there to similar acclaim in July 2005 opposite American vocalist Diane Schuur, and catching the eye of The Guardians John Fordham.
In 2006 the band was awarded the first-ever creative jazz residency at the prestigious Snape Maltings venue and music centre in Aldeburgh, Suffolk. Joined during the two-week residency by the bands fifth member - sax player and laptop sound artist Rob Townsend - and inspired by beautiful Suffolk coastlines, fresh fish and Adnams beer, they created a whole new repertoire of original, inventive material - from samples of Aldeburghs contentious Scallop Sculpture on the shingle beach, to the living legend of local fisherman, Captain Courageous.
The Ambulance quintet debuted the new Aldeburgh material on tour to rave reviews at selected venues around the UK later that summer including a three-night headline at the newly refurbished Ronnie Scotts Club in Londons Soho. They also played BMJC at The Winchester last October, to rave reviews. Don't miss them again in sextet form - with the amazing Mr. Henderson on trumpet.
