These days Mônica Vasconcelos lives in London but her music remains firmly rooted in the Brazil where she was born. The Guardian recently call her ''a curator of Brazilian music, rediscovering her compatriots' sound and reinterpreting it in a coolly individual way". Born in Sao Paulo, the vibrant melting pot for every style of Brazilian music, Monica absorbed it all and by 17 was singing samba and bossa nova in local bars. She then joined the group Beijo but after university came to Britain to learn English.

Hailing from São Paolo herself, Mônica has been described by the legendary songwriter, Robert Wyatt, as ‘a beautiful vocalist ... bringing us the dance and deep song of Brazil". Wyatt nominated her album Gente as the one album he would take to a desert island and guested on Mônica’s critically acclaimed Hih album.

Aside from this band, Vasconcelos has become best known for her ensembles Nois and Nois 4, which have put her at the forefront of the Brazilian jazz scene in Europe. A treat for lovers of easygoing Brazilian cool, Monica was one of the stars of this year's WOMAD festival.
